IRS Tax Payment Options

Start Filing

The IRS provides different options to pay the heavy vehicle use tax. You can select any of the below mentioned options as per your convenience.

  1. Electronic funds withdrawal (EFW) or Direct debit or eCheck (use while e-filing)
  2. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  3. Check or Money Order (use Payment Voucher)

1. Electronic Funds Withdrawal / Direct Debit / eCheck

You can opt EFW payment option if you are filing your form 2290 electronically.

This is the most common and popular tax payment option. You can provide your Checking / Saving bank account details while filing your form 2290 electronically. Once your return is accepted, the IRS will debit the tax amount from the provided bank account. Please make sure that you have enough funds in your bank account.

Remember, your bank account will be debited only after your form 2290 is accepted.

2. Credit or Debit Card

The IRS uses third party payment processors for payments by debit and credit cards. It's safe and secure. Choose any of the three processor:

2. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System

Best option for businesses or large payments.

You can opt this payment option if you are enrolled in EFTPS. To enroll, click here and then click Enrollment.

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System® tax payment service is provided free by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. After you've enrolled and received your credentials, you can pay any tax due to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) using this system. You may use EFTPS Web site or EFPTS voice response system (1.800.555.3453) interchangeably to make payments.

The IRS continues to remind taxpayers to watch out for email schemes. Taxpayers will only receive an email from EFTPS if they have opted in for email notifications when they sign up for email through EFTPS. Report all unsolicited email claiming to be from the IRS or an IRS-related function to phishing@irs.gov.

3. Check or Money Order

If you opt this payment method, mail payment voucher i.e. Form 2290-V along with check or money order.

Your payment voucher, will be auto filled and available to download after you complete e-filing. If you filed electronically, do not send Form 2290 and Schedule 1 with the payment voucher.

Your check or money order must be payable to the "United States Treasury". Be sure to write your EIN, "Form 2290", and the tax period (the date as shown on line 1 of Form 2290) on your check or money order. Don't send cash. Don't staple Form 2290-V or your payment to Form 2290 (or to each other). Remember, do not staple your payment along with the voucher. Send your payment and voucher to:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 932500
